Halo! Halo out there. I'm here again. It's been a long time..oh no, not so long. I was just busy last few weeks in my present job and other things in my computer. In fact I have a lot of things, some are weird and some are interesting, to share with you. And I take a vacation to Philippines which is my hometown actually start this month until March.
It's almost a year when I visited my hometown, Real in the province of Quezon, since April, 2008. I brought some of my friends there and took them around the beach and falls. My mother preapared some fresh seafoods for them and they were very enjoyed especially the "pusit", a local name for squid.
The most thing they can't forget is the "lambanog" a very popular homemade alcoholic drinks for the Quezonian. They liked it. They drink, drunk and blew-off.
This "Lambanog" is really white, pure white and clear. Clearer than water. It is puree of the "sasa" (nipa). You can smell the aroma of its own fruity characteristic. Have a lower distinguish of alcohol at the end. The first shot smoothly down the tongue, while the strongness at the throat and you'll word "whew!"
Second and third shot will be the very smooth until the next and next...then you'll word "tagay pa, bilisan!" (give me more shot, fast).
People in my hometown, the way they drink, included me is called "tagay-tagay" which means the shooter glass should be passed around from one person to another. And there is only one person who moderates the shooter glass.
This way is similar to the Batangas area. But there is no moderator. You have to do yourself and pass around the glass and/or the bottle.
Traditionally, in Quezonian old people, they strongly believe that drinking in one glass is a sign of unity, a good friendship as they called "samahan". There is no limit in the group, 2 or more persons or even long table and you may stay as long as you can.
Sometimes there is a host and mostly they start at "patak-patak" which means sharing to buy a bottle of "lambanog". Or someone has to buy a bottle (isang ipit) and another has to buy some appetizers (pulutan). Additionally, singing with the guitarist is always in the highlights.
There are two types of "lambanog" that you can taste. One is made from coconut puree and the other one is from nipa puree. The alcohol content is depends on the maker.
The higher quality is based on trying to light it with a fire. Would you like to try it? Be my guest.
I really missed it. I can't say I'm a good drinker but when it comes to "lambanog" I've tried to be.
